pumped storage power plants:
Harbour basin as potential storage with large expansion as pumped storage power plants
The perspective of this project is, to convert the harbour basin in the “Wissenschaftshafen” Magdeburg into a pumped storage power plant.  The idea is to decouple the harbour basin from the Elbe – connection with a dam. By pumping a height difference between harbour basin and Elbe – connection shall be created. With this height difference and integrated turbine electricity shall be produced.

Urban Hybrid-storage as “Windkessel” and mass-storage:
Compressed air storage/”Windkessel”-storage
Because water is just low compressible, the compressibility of air will be used. The perspective of this project is to use a part of the harbour basin as a compressed-air-storage (“Windkesselspeicher”). In the process water will be pumped in a reservoir/container which upper part is filled with air. The water fills the reservoir and an overpressure (of the air) will be produced. Because of this overpressure the water will be start to flow if a slide opens. If required this flow of water will be used and a turbine produce electrical energy. In combination with a pressure pipeline to the mass storage a hybrid storage power plant will be generated.

Hybrid storage – involvement of urban building structures:
Storage building as hybrid storage

The intention of this project is to use existing storage buildings (ancient grain-storage) near the harbour basin as hybrid storage. This could be realized in the “Wissenschaftshafen” Magdeburg. The grain storages are built as tube-storage and flat-bottom-storage. With an intelligent use concept and technologies they can be converting to energy storages.
The intention of this project is to lift a mass by means of the water pressure and use this weight later. Though water will be pump in a sealed reservoir which is connect with the mass (concrete). Caused by water pressure the mass will be lift. If required a slide opens and the flowing water (caused by the weight of the mass) drives a turbine for energy generation.

The intention of this project is to convert the harbour basin as a thermal storage and to use for energy generation in urban areas.

Thermal storage and smart grid
The intention of this project is to use the harbour basin as a thermal storage and using it for energy generation in urban areas.

Using wind energy in urban areas:
Sail-Wind-Wheel for pumping/for generating energy
The perspective of this R&D project is the development and proving of sail wind wheels/using of membrane for generating wind energy, which can be used in urban areas for pumping and/or generating energy. 

Transverse flux machine for water power applications
The intention of this project is the development and using of a gearless directly coupled transverse flux machine for using in water power with low rotational speed and high energy density.
